To create this performance, 

 I followed Alexis de Tocqueville's 1832 route

from Upstate New York to Northern Michigan to research Democracy in America, The video I shot along the way envelopped actor Geoffrey Carey’s performance at the Maison Francaise, Columbia University, N.Y., September 13, 2001 and at the Museum of American Art in Giverny, July 26 2001. Produced with grants from the Florence Gould Foundation and the Terra Foundation.
